On this World Wetlands Day 2023, we come together as Biodiversity Hub International (BHI) under the theme “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration” to emphasise the urgent need for action and conservation of these invaluable ecosystems. Wetlands are vital habitats that provide numerous benefits, from safeguarding biodiversity to mitigating climate change.
However, wetlands have been subjected to extensive degradation and loss over the years. The alarming rate of their disappearance calls for immediate restoration efforts. By restoring wetlands, we can revitalize their natural functions, enhance water quality, and rebuild crucial habitats for countless plant and animal species.
Restoration is not only a responsibility but an opportunity. It allows us to reclaim the ecological balance that wetlands offer, ensuring the provision of clean water, flood regulation, and carbon sequestration. Additionally, restored wetlands offer recreational spaces for communities, supporting tourism and providing educational opportunities.
To accomplish wetlands restoration, collaboration is key. Governments, organizations, scientists, local communities, and individuals must work hand in hand. We need policies and funding to support restoration initiatives, research to inform best practices, and engagement with communities to ensure long-term stewardship.
